Respiratory Season: How to Stay Healthy

Respiratory Season officially begins in October and runs through March, but in reality it is observed all year long. Illnesses usually peak between December and February.

Respiratory illnesses such as RSV, Flu, and COVID-19 can significantly impact individuals by causing symptoms ranging from mild to severe, potentially leading to complications like pneumonia, hospitalization, and even death. Populations such as the elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions are particularly in vulnerable.

Health officials recommend getting updated annual flu and COVID-19 shots in early fall (September or October) to build immunity before winter peaks.

Free masks are available at the Brazos County Health District

Precautions to take to keep yourself and your family healthy through the fall and winter months include the following:

  • Stay up to date on your vaccines
  • Practice respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette:
This includes covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing, disposing of tissues properly, wearing masks if necessary
  • Hand Hygiene:
It includes handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and using alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available. This helps remove dirt, germs, and pathogens, thereby reducing the risk of infection transmission.
  • Stay home when you are sick:
Staying home when you are not feeling well helps to prevent the spread of illness to others and to facilitate your own recovery.
  • Wipe / clean surfaces in your home often:
Regularly wiping and cleaning surfaces in your home is important to maintain a hygienic environment and reduce the risk of spreading germs and infections.

These measures help reduce the transmission of germs and protect both individuals and the community from respiratory illnesses.
